Another deadly Ebola outbreak has struck our continental neighbor, with Congo's health ministry confirming 80 deaths from the virus that still sends chills down the spine of every African who remembers the 2014 West Africa crisis.

Congo's Ministry of Health reports 246 suspected cases of the hemorrhagic fever, with the outbreak centered in the country's remote eastern regions where healthcare infrastructure remains fragile. Health officials are racing to contain the spread before it reaches major population centers, deploying emergency response teams to affected areas.

This marks Congo's 15th Ebola outbreak since the virus was first discovered there in 1976, highlighting how the disease continues to resurface in communities where poverty, weak health systems, and cultural practices around burial rites create perfect conditions for transmission. The country's previous outbreak in 2018-2020 killed over 2,200 people and took nearly two years to contain.

For Kenyans, this news hits differently because we know how quickly diseases can cross borders in our interconnected region. Remember how COVID-19 spread from Nairobi to the remotest counties within weeks? Our own health system, while stronger than Congo's, still struggles with basic supplies in many county hospitals where families often have to buy their own gloves and syringes.

The outbreak also raises questions about regional preparedness, especially with increased trade and movement between East and Central Africa. From the truck drivers who ferry goods along the Northern Corridor to the small-scale traders who cross borders daily, disease surveillance becomes critical when you consider how M-Pesa transactions and mobile money have made cross-border trade easier than ever.

Kenya's Ministry of Health has already activated surveillance systems at border points, but the real test lies in our ability to detect and respond quickly if cases appear locally. Our county health systems, already stretched thin by ongoing challenges with medical strikes and supply shortages, would face enormous pressure containing a disease with Ebola's fatality rate.

As Congo battles this outbreak, the question for every Kenyan becomes: are we truly prepared if Ebola reaches our borders, or are we just hoping our geography will protect us?
